Police officer injured as patrol car hit in Merstham

A police officer was injured when his patrol car was hit by 4x4 vehicle he was trying to stop in Surrey.

Officers believe the Volkswagen Touareg was deliberately driven at the police car in Merstham at 03:00 GMT on Monday, leaving the officer with an arm injury.

The car was driven off towards the A23 and police believe a vehicle found off Babylon Lane, Lower Kingswood, about an hour later was the one involved.

Officers also pursued a grey Audi heading north on the A23 from Merstham.

They used a stinger device on the Audi, which was being driven suspiciously and was later found abandoned in Star Lane, Hooley.

A police spokeswoman said there was a large police presence in the area after the initial collision in Shepherd's Hill.

Police have appealed to anyone with information to come forward, particularly if they saw the VW being parked.
