Esher bogus trading standards officer prompts alert

Warnings about bogus callers have come from Elmbridge council after reports of several incidents in the borough.

In one incident, a fake trading standards officer told an elderly woman in Esher they had identified a rogue trader who had worked on her property.

He then said she had to pay thousands of pounds to assist with evidence.

Surrey Police said there had been further reports of bogus callers selling alarm systems and falsely claiming to be working with the police.

Elmbridge council said trading standards officers never cold-called residents and always carried identification.

People have been urged to report incidents to the Citizens Advice consumer helpline or Surrey Police.
