Surrey woman driver targeted in cash scam

A woman heading towards Guildford is the latest driver in Surrey to be targeted in a scam in which people are flagged down and asked for cash.

Police said the woman was driving along Guildford Road from Lightwater on Monday afternoon when she was flagged down by a man in a layby.

The man, standing beside a red car, said he did not have any money to feed his family and asked for cash.

Police are linking it to a series of similar incidents near the M3.

'Do not stop'

In two incidents on 22 January, a man was stopping cars on the entry slips at junctions three and four, claiming he had run out of money and needed cash.

On 3 February a man was attempting to flag down vehicles on the London-bound carriageway at junction four.

"I urge motorists to ensure they are not caught out by these con men," said Det Sgt Chris Greatorex.

"If you see a lone person flagging you down on a slip road do not stop but call police when you are able.

"Anyone in real difficulty would be able to use the emergency telephones on the hard shoulder."
