A man who fled from a burglary in Surrey escaped after his accomplices were arrested by police who used a stinger to halt the getaway car.

The car hit a lamppost in Hampton Court Road after police pursued it following the burglary in Sidney Road, Walton-on-Thames, on Saturday.

The three men escaped but two, aged 22 and 23, were arrested after a search by a police helicopter and dog unit.

The two men have been released on bail until 13 February pending inquiries.

The stolen property, including jewellery and mobile phones, was found in the Hampton Court area and returned to its owner.

"I urge anyone who saw any part of this incident or anyone behaving suspiciously to get in touch immediately, particularly if they witnessed the males running away from the silver car," said Det Con Jon Rees.
