Student smokers in Redhill 'annoying' residents

People living near a college in Surrey have complained that student smokers are making "their lives intolerable".

Staff and students at East Surrey College, in Redhill, were banned from smoking in the grounds in September.

Residents said it had led to large crowds of students gathering outside their houses, spitting, swearing and even urinating in their front gardens.

College spokeswoman Chris Long said she understood the complaints and hoped a compromise could be agreed.

She said every effort was being made to identify students responsible for bad behaviour, and some had been suspended where standards had not been met.

Healthier lifestyles

A petition calling for a smoking area on the college campus to be reinstated has been organised by the Claremont Road Residents' Association.

The college banned smoking on its grounds to encourage healthier lifestyles.

Ms Long added: "I think that it is still a message that we feel important for students to see that it is not something we accept.

"If we have a smoking shelter it will be very visible and could then be seen that we are condoning smoking."
