Flood barriers put up in Staines upon Thames test exercise

Households in a Surrey town put up flood barriers after being sent warning text messages as part of an exercise.

The exercise was staged in part of Staines upon Thames on Tuesday to help residents prepare for flooding.

Householders received phone calls and texts at 18:30 GMT and officers from the Environment Agency helped them install flood barriers.

Doug Hill, of the agency, said: "It was a great opportunity for them to react to a potential flooding situation."

Property surveys will be offered to residents in the Lower Thames area and advice offered on installation of flood barriers.
