Banstead A217 water main work left ‘ripples’ in road

A section of road in Surrey where traffic was disrupted for six months while a water main was laid will have to be dug up again for resurfacing.

Tests by Surrey County Council found the surface of the A217 was uneven and did not meet the required standard by one sixth of an inch (3-4mm).

Councillor Michael Gosling said the surface between Banstead and Chipstead roundabouts had a "ripple effect".

Sutton and East Surrey Water said the work would be done in late August.

The water company originally wanted to lay the pipe across Banstead Heath to avoid major traffic disruption, but Banstead Commons Conservators refused to give consent.

'Incredibly uneven'

The work was finished in February this year.

Mr Gosling said the stretch to be resurfaced was "incredibly uneven".

"It has been extruded back on to the road with a ripple effect," he said.

"The utilities have a requirement in law to put the roads back to the way they were before and this hasn't been done.

"They have now agreed to do something about it."

Sutton and East Surrey Water said: "Our contractor will carry out the work in late August by agreement with Surrey Highways.

"The programme has yet to be confirmed but we will work with Surrey Highways to minimise disruption."
