Royal wedding: 200 street parties planned in Surrey

Prince William and Kate Middleton Surrey council said it hoped the sun shone when the couple got married

Nearly 200 applications for royal wedding street parties have been given the go-ahead in Surrey, according to the latest figures.

Surrey County Council said it had agreed 191 road closures to allow people to celebrate the marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Elmbridge had the most requests in the county with 32, followed by Reigate and Banstead with 30.

The authority said it hoped the sun shone for the 29 April event.

'Celebrating with neighbours'

Ian Lake, of Surrey County Council, said: "The fact that so many people are planning to come together to celebrate the Royal wedding shows the sense of community spirit that makes Surrey such a wonderful place to live in.

"I can't think of a better way for Surrey residents to spend the day than celebrating with neighbours and friends in the sunshine.

"I just hope for everyone's sake we get good weather."

The authority said it only consulted on road closures and any further applications for royal wedding parties should be made to district and borough councils which made the final decision.
