A priest has been charged with fraud following an allegation that £13,000 was dishonestly gained from a church.

Canon Ian Finn, 55, from Hopton Rise, Haverhill in Suffolk, has been charged with fraud by abuse of position.

The offences relate to St Mary The Virgin Church in Haverhill town centre and are alleged to have taken place between 2007 and 2014.

Canon Finn is due to appear before magistrates in Bury St Edmunds in September.

John Howard, spokesman for the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich, said: "This matter is with Suffolk Constabulary and the courts and it is therefore inappropriate to comment at this stage."

The Church of England said Mr Finn had been suspended pending the outcome of the court case.
