Motocross star and Bond stuntman Dave Bickers dies aged 76

Motocross "legend" and James Bond stuntman Dave Bickers has died from a stroke aged 76.

His profile in motocross grew in the early 1960s when he won two consecutive European championships.

Bickers doubled as Roger Moore in the 1983 film Octopussy and Escape to Athena in 1979.

Many people paid tribute to the rider, who lived in Coddenham, Suffolk, and died on 6 July, his son Paul Bickers said.

"The response from people in the motorcycle and film industries has been immense," he said.

In 1960, he was awarded the Motorcycle News Man of the Year award.

He was part of a team which won two Trophée des Nations events and later two Motocross des Nations competitions.

Roger Chaplin, president of the Sudbury Motor Cycle Club, said: "I had the privilege to see him ride in his early times and he instantly became one of my heroes".

In 1976, Bickers started up a film and TV stunt action company.

It has provided stunt equipment for James Bond films The World is Not Enough, Casino Royale and Skyfall, as well as several Harry Potter movies and other blockbusters.

Bickers' son Paul, who works as the company's managing director, said his father's death made him realise the "high regard" in which he was held.

"It's become apparent to me that I didn't realise how well-known and famous he was," Paul said.

"He was 'dad' to me, but all the lovely things people have been saying make me look at him in a different light."
