Athletics coach Stephen Benson in rape conviction appeal

Stephen Benson Benson was jailed for 16 years at Ipswich Crown Court last week

A sports coach who raped and sexually assaulted young female athletes is appealing against his convictions.

Stephen Benson, 50, of Copdock, Suffolk, was jailed for 16 years last week after being convicted of 19 offences at Ipswich Crown Court.

The Ipswich Harriers Athletics Club coach groomed three young athletes between 1989 and 2011, the court heard.

The appeal has been lodged at Ipswich, but would be dealt with by the Court of Appeal in London.

The jury found him guilty of nine rapes and 10 sexual assaults after hearing he abused his position of authority.

The three victims were aged between 15 and 18 years old when the offences took place.

Benson was found not guilty of two further rape charges.
