Hourly train service between Ipswich and Lowestoft after £4m works

The new loop at Beccles means trains can pass each other

An hourly off-peak train service will run between Ipswich and Lowestoft, after a £4m scheme to lay about 390 metres of new track was completed.

A "passing loop" has been built between Halesworth and Oulton Broad, where a 16-mile stretch of single track had limited services to every two hours.

The new East Suffolk line timetable starts on Sunday. Trains are more regular during peak hours.

Track and signalling work, costing £21m, is also being carried out.

Peter Meades, of Greater Anglia, said passengers had been put off by the infrequency of the trains.

"The hourly timetable will make the route more attractive for people who are considering taking journeys by rail," he said.
