A Suffolk teacher charged with 23 sexual offences has appeared in court.

Stephen Benson, 50, of Pearsons Way, Copdock, did not enter a plea at South East Suffolk Magistrates' Court.

He is accused of committing nine rapes, two counts of sexual activity with a child, two counts of sexual assault and 10 counts of indecent assault.

Mr Benson, who has been suspended from his job at Copleston High, Ipswich, was remanded on bail. He is due to appear at the town's Crown Court on 19 July.

The offences are alleged to have taken place between 1989 and 2010.

The school said the charges did not relate to current pupils.
