Stowmarket pupil Lily Webster dies during PE lesson

A 15-year-old girl has died during a school trampoline lesson in Stowmarket.

Lily Webster, a Year 11 pupil at Stowmarket High School, was taking part in the PE lesson at Mid Suffolk Leisure Centre when she collapsed.

The teenager was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics on Monday afternoon.

Head teacher Keith Penn said Lily had finished a trampoline routine and got down but then started feeling unwell and "deteriorated very rapidly".

'Terrible tragedy'

Mr Penn said the school was shocked and saddened, adding that "all our thoughts and prayers are with her family and close friends".

He said: "Popular, active, bright and with a very wide circle of friends, Lily will be desperately missed by students and staff and all those who knew her."

Suffolk County Council said counsellors were being sent to the school to speak to children who needed support.

The leisure centre is operated by the SLM Community Leisure Charitable Trust on behalf of the owners, Mid Suffolk District Council.

A council spokesperson: "As part of this terrible tragedy, the leisure centre and the school are required to notify the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

"The HSE will then decide if an investigation will be led by themselves or if Mid Suffolk District Council will be required to complete this.

"At this point we are awaiting confirmation from the HSE on the this matter."

A spokesman for the East of England Ambulance Service said Lily was in a critical condition when medical staff arrived.

He said: "Ambulance crews, the doctor and the critical care team from the air ambulance worked extensively to treat and stabilise the girl but following everyone's best efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene."
