Suffolk brewer Adnams starts distillery

Suffolk brewery Adnams has opened a distillery producing vodka, gin and whiskey.

The company has been brewing beer on its Southwold site since 1872, when George and Ernest Adnams bought the Sole Bay Brewery.

Beer has been brewed there since the 14th Century.

Now gin and vodka made at the new distillery based in the Copper House at the Sole Bay Brewery are on sale, with whiskey to follow in three years time.

Chairman Jonathan Adnams said: "Small scale distillation produces spirits of a quality and character that far surpass mass-produced products.

"I believe we are the first brewery in the UK to brew beer and distil spirits on the same premises."
