Hospital in Suffolk boosts number of joint replacements

More than 400 knee replacements are now carried out at a Suffolk hospital compared with only three in 1981.

West Suffolk Hospital NHS Trust board discussed how joint replacement procedures had grown.

Willem Schenk, orthopaedic surgeon, told an annual meeting that patients now remain in hospital for as little as three days, compared with 12 in 1981.

The hospital's joint care programme prepares patients for surgery and provides care in their own homes.

Waiting times for hip and knee joint replacements had also been reduced considerably, the meeting heard.
