M6 motorway to close overnight for gantry work

A section of the M6 motorway is to close overnight to allow major work to be carried out on overhead gantries.

The southbound carriageway will close from 22:00 BST until 06:00 between junctions 12 and 10a in Staffordshire.

Overnight closures are expected to continue for the next 15 days, with full closures planned for October.

The work is part of the £102m Smart Motorway scheme. The Highways Agency said it was necessary to shut the carriageway for safety reasons.

Project manager David Cooke said the work would see new equipment and signs installed on overhead gantries.

The M6 Smart Motorway scheme is due to be finished next year. The Highways Agency said it was designed to reduce congestion.
