Two in court over Smallthorne attack on Leonard Holmes

Two men have appeared in court over an attack on a 60-year-old man who suffered head and facial injuries in Stoke-on-Trent.

Leonard Holmes was assaulted in Smallthorne, at about 01:00 BST on Saturday, police said.

Jacob Havard, 19, and Matthew Fereday, 23, are accused of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

Both men were remanded in custody at a hearing at Newcastle-under-Lyme Magistrates' Court.

They will next appear at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on 2 May.

Mr Holmes remains in a critical but stable condition in hospital.
