Man seriously hurt in violent assault in Smallthorne

A man is "fighting for his life" in hospital after being violently assaulted in a Staffordshire street.

He was attacked at about 01:00 BST in Brownley Road, at the junction with Community Drive in Smallthorne.

Staffordshire Police said the victim had yet to be identified, but he was believed to be local and aged between 40 and 50 years old.

Several roads have been cordoned off as part of the investigation and police have apologised for any inconvenience.

Ch Insp Martin Brereton said: "This attack has left a man fighting for his life.

"We're trying to establish his identity at the moment and any help from the local community would be very much appreciated."
