Councillors have backed plans to close three day centres for people with learning disabilities in Staffordshire.

Members of the county council's health scrutiny committee voted on Monday to shut centres in Kidsgrove and Codsall with one in Leek being downsized.

Staffordshire County Council said it wants to deliver more services in the community rather than incurring the costs of maintaining buildings.

A final decision will be made by the council's cabinet on Wednesday.

As part of the changes, the authority said new centres would be built for those with the most complex needs, while a series of support packages would be funded for many others.

Campaigners say the proposals will remove essential care from about 70% of those currently attending day centres.

More than 100 people protested against the plans in Cannock on Saturday.
