Bernard James Smith named as Stafford road death victim

A man whose body was found by the side of a road has been named by police.

Bernard James Smith, 83, from Shakespeare Road, Stafford, was found at the road's junction with Wordsworth Avenue in the early hours of Christmas Day.

A post mortem examination revealed he died from multiple chest injuries.

Staffordshire Police have been given more time to question a 22-year-old man arrested on suspicion of being unfit to drive through either drink or drugs.

Officers said he remained in custody and appealed for anyone with information to contact them.

In a statement, Mr Smith's family said they were finding it "extremely difficult at this time" but described the 83-year-old as "very independent".
