Two people who died in a Staffordshire house fire were a couple in their 80s.

Peter Goffe, 86, and his wife Beryl, 85, died in the blaze which began at about 18:20 BST on Tuesday.

It is believed to have started in a bedroom at their detached house in Lichfield Road, Stone. The couple were confirmed dead at the scene.

Staffordshire Police said a joint investigation with the fire service revealed it had been a "tragic accident".

Crews from Stone were called to the house after the alarm was raised by a relative of the couple.

Rob Barber, from Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: "Crews on arrival were met by some family members who'd attended the property and were met with a severely smoke-logged first floor.

"Breathing apparatus crews entered the building and brought the two individuals out of the property."

Det Supt Stuart Carter from Staffordshire Police said a report was now being prepared for the coroner.
