Two day care centres in Stoke-on-Trent are to close on Monday.

The centres in Burslem and Fenton were run by the city council but the service has been taken over by voluntary and independent providers.

Councillor Gwen Hassall said it was part of a modernisation programme and a centre in Longton would stay open.

Disability group Phab Freewheelers in Burslem have had to relocate and spokeswoman Gillian Cooper she said she was disappointed with the closure.

"Burslem has been an excellent home and it's so sad that we are losing it and also the community is losing such a good facility," she said.

"The furniture, the inside of the building, it's just an excellent standard and the people who use it as a day centre are going to miss it."

In February councillors at the Labour-led authority approved plans to cut £21m from next year's budget.
