Alton Towers Glasgow school coach crashes

A coach carrying 40 Glasgow school pupils home from a trip to the Alton Towers theme park has crashed in Staffordshire.

The driver was arrested following the three-vehicle crash on the A500 near Audley.

The 50-seater coach was taking home pupils and teachers from Bannerman High School in Baillieston.

No-one was seriously hurt and the 48-year-old driver, from Stirlingshire, was released on bail.

The crash, involving a black Renault Clio and a black Jeep Cherokee, happened at about 20:00 BST close to a roundabout.

'Safely back'

The 24-year-old female driver of the Clio was taken to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire with minor injuries and has since been discharged.

Glasgow City Council said the pupils and teachers were about 45 minutes into their journey home when the crash happened.

A relief coach took them home.

"The police and an ambulance attended and thankfully they only had to treat a couple of young people for very minor injuries," a spokesman said.

"The police are now investigating the incident and all pupils and staff have arrived safely back at school."

The northbound carriageway of the A500 was closed for about two hours.
