Burslem Park sculpture missing for 50 years replaced

Stoke-on-Trent City Council said the Mayfly sculpture cost about £32,000

A sculpture that was taken away from a Staffordshire park for repair about 50 years ago is being replaced.

A water nymph donated to Burslem park, Stoke-on-Trent, in 1894 by Sir Henry Doulton was vandalised in the 1960s.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council said the sculpture was removed to be worked on but was never returned.

A new Mayfly statue is being unveiled as part of a £2m revamp of the park that has included restoring a Victorian pavilion.

The project has been part-funded by grants from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Big Lottery Fund.

The new statue, designed by Phil Hardaker and Andrew Edwards, cost about £32,000, the city council said.

Its plinth also features designs by local schoolchildren.

A spokesperson said the new statue was not a replica of the original, because a detailed photograph of it could not be found.
