Island campaigners to send picture to Queen

Protesters surrounded the island for more than five hours on Wednesday

Campaigners against plans to remove a roundabout in Staffordshire say they plan to give the Queen a picture of it for her Diamond Jubilee.

About 100 protesters attempted to disrupt maintenance work at the roundabout in Leek on Thursday.

The island is due to be turned into a junction with traffic lights as part of a £5m council plan to improve traffic flow.

People fear the lights will obscure a World War I memorial.

In 2011, more than 4,000 people signed a petition to save it.

Crown 'disappeared'

Campaigner Sarah Gayton said they also want to see the return of a crown that topped the lamppost in the centre of the island which was removed on Wednesday.

"We feel like we have been beheaded - it's disappeared," she said.

"It's been on the top of that roundabout for years and years and it's disappeared."

The campaigners surrounded the island for about five hours on Wednesday.

The council said contractors were at the scene to do some preparatory electrical work which had nothing to do with the redevelopment.

The local Royal British Legion (RBL) has also complained the lights would affect the view of the memorial, which was built by industrialist Sir Arthur Nicholson.
