The 18-month-old-boy, who has not been identified, was taken to hospital on Friday morning but died as a result of a head injury.

A 32-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman from the Stoke-on-Trent area were arrested. The man is due to appear at the city magistrates' court on Monday.

The woman was released without charge. Police said she would receive support from specially trained officers.

Paramedics from West Midlands Ambulance Service were called to a house in Meir at 10:05 GMT on Friday and took the boy to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire but he could not be saved.
