Explosive end for disused South Yorkshire pit tower

17 July 2014 Last updated at 03:59 BST

The winding tower at a closed South Yorkshire coal mine has been demolished using explosives.

Former workers at Maltby Colliery near Rotherham gathered to watch the destruction of the 256ft (78m) high structure.

The pit was in operation for more than a century but closed last year after its owners said that geological problems meant it was no longer financially viable.
