A murder inquiry has been begun after a man's body was discovered near a primary school in Sheffield.

The body was found by a member of the public at about 06:30 GMT on land off Birley Spa Lane, Hackenthorpe, near Rainbow Forge Primary.

Police said the dead man was believed to have been in his 30s and from Sheffield. His family has been told.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said the man may have been the victim of an assault.

A post-mortem examination and formal identification are due to take place later.

Det Supt Phil Etheridge said he "urgently" needed to speak to anyone who had been in the area between Monday night and the time the body was found.
