In February the force recorded 859 shoplifting offences , with 126 in Barnsley.

The total marks a 10% increase in shoplifting offences, compared to the same month last year.

Ch Insp Gwyn Thomas, force lead for retail crime, said: "Police in Barnsley are not taking any chances and want to make sure this shoplifting continues to fall.

"Crime reduction officers continue to work closely with shops and businesses, providing guidance about security at their premises.

"Officers will be targeting offenders who are wanted for shoplifting offences, and PCSOs will be running crime reduction stalls in many retail stores throughout the borough."
