Barnsley communities 'could pick up litter'

Clearing the streets of a South Yorkshire town of litter may become a task for community volunteers and offenders working on payback schemes, councillors have been told.

Cabinet members in Barnsley have received a report on litter collection and street cleaning in the face of budget restrictions.

The authority said it wants to "bring new resources to bear".

Councillors were told similar schemes operated in other parts of the country.
