Three people arrested on suspicion of murdering a missing man have been released on bail.

Thomas Groome, 56, from Ireland, has not been seen since he left his son's house in Doncaster in January 2010.

His family thought he had gone to Portugal to start a business, but reported him missing when they could not contact him.

A 36-year-old man from Wheatley and two men from Bentley, aged 23 and 56, have been bailed while inquiries continue.

Mr Groome was last seen driving a 2002-registered black Volkswagen Golf car, which police said had been customised and was distinctive.

South Yorkshire Police said it was trying to establish whether Mr Groome made it out of the country in 2010.

Det Supt Lisa Ray said: "We are trying to trace his car and any sightings of it.

"This is likely to be a lengthy investigation as we have several geographical areas to search and liaison overseas with officials in Portugal and the Republic of Ireland.

"There is also additional in-depth forensic work to be carried out in various areas and we are still searching the properties of the men we arrested."
