Stobart lorry driver dispute ends in redundancy deal

The lorry drivers had been on indefinite strike since 6 December

An indefinite strike by lorry drivers in South Yorkshire has ended with a deal reached with employer Eddie Stobart.

Members of the Unite unite walked out of the Tesco distribution centre in Doncaster on 6 December, but have now accepted an improved redundancy offer.

The long-running dispute began in September after Eddie Stobart announced potential job losses.

Unite said 180 drivers will be made redundant on 4 January.

National officer Adrian Jones said: "The redundancy financial package has been substantially improved, and... none of our members have to go back to work for this employer.

"They just do not want to work for Eddie Stobart, it's a company they feel very strongly about."

The company took over from Tesco as the drivers' employer in August.

David Pickering, Eddie Stobart managing director, said: "Since the start of September, we've worked diligently and professionally to come up with the best possible package for the drivers and to provide a range of alternative employment options.

"It's a positive way to resolve the dispute and I'm extremely pleased for all parties that the drivers have accepted our latest offer."
