Residents need ID at Barnsley waste sites

Residents of a South Yorkshire town are being asked to carry proof of identity when using refuse sites to prevent the centres being overloaded.

The request from Barnsley council comes on a weekend when staff at recycling centres in Sheffield are taking industrial action.

Officials at the town are concerned that residents from Sheffield, 16 miles away, may use Barnsley sites.

They said waste volumes had increased during previous strikes in Sheffield.

Councillor Roy Miller said the decision to monitor the users of the sites was to ensure residents were not paying to dispose of Sheffield's waste.

He said: "Usage across the four household waste recycling centres in Barnsley has the potential to increase as residents from Sheffield may attempt to gain entry to these facilities.

"This causes unnecessary delay for residents and increases the cost of waste disposal to the authority."
