Paralympic flame goes on show in Sheffield

Sheffield Paralympian Anthony Farrel carried the lantern into Norfolk Heritage Park for the event

The Paralympic flame has gone on show in South Yorkshire at a special event celebrating the Games.

The flame was displayed at Sheffield's Jubilee Fayre in Norfolk Heritage Park, an event expected to attract about 20,000 visitors.

Sheffield table tennis Paralympian Farrel Anthony carried the lantern into the park at about 13:00 BST.

As part of the event, visitors were able to take part in disability sport sessions including goalball and boccia.

'Good wishes'

Born with cerebral palsy, Anthony began playing table tennis for Great Britain in 1997.

He represented his country at the Paralympic Games in Sydney in 2000 and Athens in 2004.

The Paralympian narrowly missed out on qualifying for the 2012 London Games.

Olympic torchbearer John Birkhill also attended the event with the torch he carried during the relay.

Councillor Isobel Bowler said: "After the excitement of the torch relay, the Olympic Games and the celebration of Jessica Ennis's gold medal, I am delighted that Sheffield can continue our summer celebration of sporting excellence by hosting the Paralympic flame."

A total of 48 people from Sheffield were in the Team GB Paralympic team and "all the good wishes of the city" went with them, said Ms Bowler.
