Gold phonebox for Olympian Ed Clancy in Ingbirchworth

A disused phonebox near Barnsley has been painted gold to mark the birthplace of Olympian Ed Clancy.

Parish councillors in Ingbirchworth decided to paint the ex-BT phonebox to celebrate the cyclist's gold and bronze medals during the London 2012 Games.

The group, which bought the phonebox from BT, said it wanted to mark the area where Clancy lived before moving to Huddersfield aged eight.

A Royal Mail postbox was painted gold in Railway Street, Huddersfield.

Keith Batley, a member of the parish council, said the group which owned the phonebox was considering using it as a book exchange.

"It will stay gold for the foreseeable future. We haven't had any adverse comments so far and it's been really positive," said Mr Batley.

"We've got the union flag flying to support the Paralympics, just to keep that feel-good factor going."

Clancy won a gold medal in the men's pursuit and bronze in the track cycling omnium event.
