Eden Lodge children's home closure confirmed

A South Yorkshire residential home for children with severe disabilities will close in the autumn.

Doncaster Council voted to shut the Eden Lodge home in Stainforth, which provides short-break residential care.

The council said the closure "ensures good use of public funds" and claimed it had found "suitable alternative provision for all the children concerned".

One parent said he was "very disappointed" at the closure

Doncaster Council's director of the children and young people's service, Chris Pratt, said: "We recognise that parents are concerned about the closure, but in the current financial climate the council cannot justify keeping this very expensive facility open.

"The council at all times has a duty to ensure value for money, and particularly at the present time with substantial cuts to government funding and increasing demands on children's social care services."

One man whose son uses the unit said although his child had been provided with an alternative centre, he was disappointed with Eden Lodge's closure.

"It just a shame they have lost the facility," he said.

"The team there worked very well together."

The centre will close in October.
