Solar Centre abuse charges authorised

Four people are to face charges relating to the mistreatment of patients at a mental health unit in Doncaster.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said the alleged offences took place at the Solar Centre at St Catherine's Hospital between 2005 and 2007.

James Hinds, 58, Susan Murphy, 43, Julie Burge, 48 and Michael Barnard, 49, had all worked at the centre.

The CPS said they had been summonsed to court to be formally charged.

Richard Hebbert, from the CPS, said he was satisfied it was in the public interest to prosecute.

"I have authorised South Yorkshire Police to commence proceedings for a prosecution against four people relating to the ill-treatment and wilful neglect of patients receiving treatment for mental health disorders.

"The charges relate to 18 patients, both men and women, and occurred between January 2005 and March 2007," he said.
