Memorial honours WWII Lancaster bomber crew

A memorial honouring seven members of a Lancaster bomber crew killed in a crash in South Yorkshire during World War II has been unveiled.

The bomber was on a training flight when it crashed near Old Edlington village, Doncaster, in 1943, but the incident was censored until 2006.

The memorial has been organised by resident David Glover, 67, who said he was fascinated by the story.

Mr Glover said it was important that the crew received recognition.

"It's bugged me ever since I was a lad," he said.

"There was a rumour in the early 50s when I was a lad that a German bomber had actually crashed in Edlington Wood.

"This stuck with me for a long, long time and it made me try to find out where this German bomber had actually crashed.

"We just kept hitting a curtain of censorship until 2006 when details emerged."

The memorial has cost £1,000 and has been funded by Doncaster Town Council.

It was unveiled during a ceremony attended by members of the Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA), the council and residents, Mr Glover said.
