Murder probe as man dies at Sheffield New Year's Eve party

A man has died at a New Year's Eve party in Sheffield.

South Yorkshire Police were called to the scene at the Stars and Mayfair party suites on Queens Road at about 02:45 GMT on 1 January 2012.

Officers said they believed the man died of his injuries following a confrontation.

A murder inquiry has been launched and inquiries are ongoing. South Yorkshire Police have appealed for any witnesses to contact them.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said: "This incident happened at a busy event with more than 400 people in attendance.

"Police are continuing to investigate a number of lines of inquiry to identify the person or people responsible for the man's death."

The scene, which was cordoned off for forensic officers, also houses a casino and roller-skating rink.

According to its website, the venue caters for functions for 50 to 700 guests, including weddings and birthday parties.
