'Financially unviable' Rotherham GP practice to close

A GP practice in South Yorkshire will close after becoming "financially unviable".

Brampton Medical Practice in Rotherham opened in 2009 to provide a service for between 3,000 and 6,000 patients.

But NHS Rotherham said the practice was built on the assumption that 1,400 houses would be built in the area.

Due to the "economic downturn" the houses were not built and the practice attracted only 1,000 patients. It is due to close on 27 May.

In a statement NHS Rotherham said: "Financial assumptions were made by Wentworth North Primary Care Ltd based on the anticipated growth in patient population.

"However due to the economic climate the houses have not been built and Wentworth North has not been able to recruit the volume of patients they thought they would."

'Unusual case'

The lack of patients means the practice did not "receive the level of income required to sustain" it making it "financially unviable".

Chris Edwards from NHS Rotherham said: "This has been an unusual case as the practice was brand new starting from scratch with no patients and working on the basis that they could recruit enough patients to gain sufficient income.

"As a matter of course we'll conduct an independent review of what's happened just so we can get a full understanding and if there are any other lessons to be learned they'll be learned."

Mr Edwards said NHS Rotherham was working with other practices in the area to limit the possibility of redundancy for the ten staff, including three GPs.

All registered patients have been sent letters informing them of the closure and their allocation to three medical practices in the local area.

Mr Edwards added the situation was considered a "one-off occurrence".
