Plans for a new 25m six-lane pool and spa in Somerset have been given the go ahead.

The £5.3m centre will be built at Blackbrook Pavilion in Taunton and will replace the old St James Street pool.

A Taunton Deane Borough Council spokesperson said a contract was set to be awarded in October and building work could start in January.

A decision to approve outline plans for the new pool's development "in principle" was made last year.

A council spokesperson said there was evidence dormice could be living in dense scrub, which will need to cleared for the development.

"A special licence will be needed to clear the undergrowth and a new habitat will be created for the creatures", they added.
