A nine-year-old girl who died after being hit by a bus in Swindon was a "popular" and "vibrant" student, her school has said.

Caitlin Hunt was knocked down by a Thamesdown bus at Blair Parade in the Moredon area of the town shortly before 18:00 GMT on Tuesday.

The Year Four pupil, who attended Rodbourne Cheney Primary School, was treated at the scene, but died of her injuries.

A police investigation is under way.

In a statement Rodbourne Cheney Primary School said: "It was with great regret and sadness that we heard of the tragic death of one of our pupils, Caitlin Hunt, last night.

"Caitlin was a vibrant and passionate learner at Rodbourne Cheney Primary School and her lack of presence in the future will be noticeable.

"She was a popular girl, loved by teachers, the pupils, but especially by her classmates. It is hard to imagine the terrible sense of loss and tragedy which is being felt by Caitlin's family at this time and our deepest sympathies are with them."

The school said pastoral support is being offered by the local clergy, specialist bereavement councillors and The Samaritans.

Caitlin's family is also being supported by trained officers from Wiltshire Police.

'Cooperating with police'

She was hit at the junction of Moredon Road and Churchwalk outside a parade of shops.

The road was cordoned off by police on Tuesday night and reopened on Wednesday morning.

Paul Jenkins, managing director of Thamesdown Transport, said: "We are fully cooperating with current police investigations however our thoughts are with the family at this difficult time.

"We are also supporting our driver and the team who have been affected by this accident."

No arrests have been made. The police said they are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the crash.
