An investigation into the impact of wind turbines and larger scale solar farms on the Mendips is under way.

Mendip District Council said the aim was to better understand the "positive and negative impacts" of the installations on local communities.

The authority is asking local residents for their input into the investigation.

A spokesman said it would "cut through the myths" and "assess the facts surrounding renewable energy installations".

"Councils across the country are seeing an increasing number of planning applications for turbines and solar farms," he said.

"They can often polarise communities with conflicting claims about the benefits and negative impacts from them and conflicting legislation and guidance coming from government."

The spokesman said the council would look at the benefits and adverse effects of renewable energy infrastructure on local residents.

Councillors working on the scheme will consider all information received and report its findings to the council's scrutiny board in March 2014.
