Taunton and Henlade speed limit changes to be introduced

New speed limits between Taunton and Henlade will come into force later this month.

Priory Avenue, Toneway, junction 25 of the M5 and the A358 are the key routes affected by the changes.

Signs are currently in the process of being replaced, but the new speed limits will not come into force until 21 October.

Somerset County Council said it had consulted local councils and the police over the changes.

These are:

  • The 30 mph limit on the motorway junction will be increased to 40 mph - the 30 mph zone will start before the Taunton Gateway park and ride site on the A358
  • The speed limit on Priory Avenue will be reduced from 40 to 30 mph
  • The speed limit on Toneway and the A358 at Hankridge will be reduced from 50 to 40 mph

"We have listened to local parish councils and the police who were concerned that drivers were often unsure about the speed limit in these areas," said Councillor Harvey Siggs, cabinet member for highways.

"We do not want to unfairly penalise motorists, but we do need to make sure our roads are safe."
