A former Royal Marine from Somerset has died after being attacked as he left a rugby game in South Africa.

Brett Williams was seriously injured following a game between Durban Sharks and Melbourne Rebels last Sunday night.

The 29-year-old had lived at Bishops Lydeard, near Taunton, with his family while serving with 40 Commando for 11 years.

Mr Williams moved to South Africa last March but had been hoping to rejoin the marines.

South African police said officers had made one arrest in connection with his death.

The Foreign Office confirmed the death of a British national in Durban on 24 March.

A spokesman said it was offering consular assistance.
