Bath driver given parking ticket for leaving car in snow

A man who abandoned his car because deep snow was blocking his route has been given a parking ticket.

Paul Hermon was stuck near Bath and said he parked his car "neatly" on a "quiet side road" after finding he could not continue his journey.

Mr Hermon said he returned to his car to move it at 08.50 GMT the next day but found the ticket.

Bath and North East Somerset Council said an appeal following bad weather would be "considered sympathetically".

Tuesday's snow saw widespread disruption around Bath and Somerset with more than 30 drivers abandoning their cars on the A39.

'After the horrors'

And a bus journey from Bath to Midsomer Norton - which should take 90 minutes - ended up taking six hours because of the traffic problems.

Mr Hermon said he tried several diversions to get home to Wells but found they were all blocked.

He eventually abandoned his car in the Twerton area of the city before checking in at a bed and breakfast.

"They must have been waiting for the crack of dawn to come out and start booking people," he said.

"After the horrors of the night before you would have thought they would have waited a bit to give everybody an opportunity to get back and move their vehicles.

"There must have been dozens and dozens of people who got stranded.".

Mr Hermon admitted he had parked on a single yellow line but added "common sense should prevail".

"Yes, I parked illegally but this is a quiet side road which had only my vehicle parked in it," he said.

"It didn't cause any obstruction whatsoever - I could understand if it was right in the middle of a main road and abandoned at 45 degrees but it was neatly parked."
