Weston housing estate saved from flood water

High powered pumps and some 60 firefighters have helped save dozens of homes on a housing estate near the A370 Somerset Way in Weston-super-Mare from flooding.

An Avon Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said the specialist pumps are able to shift up to 8,000 litres of water per minute.

"The pumps are moving the water about 3km (1.9m) away from here," he added.

Last week the Environment Agency put up dams to provide a temporary storage area for the flood water on nearby farmland.
