A foodbank has officially opened in Taunton despite having lower than desired food stocks.

The Trussell Trust normally needs three tonnes of food to operate, but due to demand it has opened with 1.5 tonnes.

Keith Whittaker, who helped set up the facility, said: "We've had phones calls from people ringing up and saying 'are you open yet? We need food'."

A new foodbank called Cary Cupboard has opened in Castle Cary and another is also being set up in Highbridge.

Mr Whittaker said: "We've got a collection next week so that people can help us donate food and get us to that target.

"We're hoping that with this extra push people will be even more generous than they've been already."
