Trussell Trust wants donations for Taunton foodbank

A charity is asking for more donations in order to open a new foodbank in Taunton for the school holidays.

The Trussell Trust says it needs food parcels ready for when children who get free school meals are at home.

The charity only has one tonne of food out of the three it needs to start the scheme and keep it rolling in the town.

The trust's Kevin Whittaker said: "There's more and more children who are not getting the nutrition they need during the school holidays."

Trussell Trust foodbanks provide a minimum of three days of emergency food and support to people experiencing financial difficulties in the UK.

The charity helps people who experience a sudden change in circumstances, such as a redundancy to receiving an unexpected bill on a low income.

"A lot of people when children are off on holiday they have to work less hours in order to care for their children, which means additional costs and they then have less income," Mr Whittaker added.
